Jewish Prayer Books

This half term on Hoots from the Archive, we will be looking at the links between MGS and the Jewish Community. This was prompted by working with the Jewish Board of Deputies on a project called “Hidden Treasures” which aims to celebrate and showcase Jewish archives in the UK. We will look at Jewish artefacts in the archive, oral histories from Jewish OMs and highlight some of our notable Jewish OMs. You can visit “Hidden Treasures” here

Over the last two years we have spent time interviewing a number of Old Mancunians about their time at Manchester Grammar School. Whilst this oral history project was originally started to record the memories of OMs who were at the School during WWII, some Jewish OMs have been interviewed and so we asked them what it was like to be a Jewish boy in particular at MGS. The two individuals on this recording are Theo Roland (OM 1938 – 1945) and Louis Rapaport (OM 1943 – 1949).
