Prince Charles at MGS

The school has a visitor book that dates back to the relocation from Long Millgate to Old Hall Lane in 1931. A huge range of people have signed the book over the impressive eighty-two year span. Royalty such as the Queen (1965) and Prince Charles (1998) are probably the most illustrious names included.

                                                                                                   Charles with HM Martin Stephen
Visiting political and military figures ranging from Ministers to backbenchers include Rab Butler (1947), Jack Straw (1991), Michael Heseltine (1990), Jeffrey Archer (1987), Ellen Wilkinson (1938), Enoch Powell (1989), Monty of Alamein (1945 and 1956) and Michael Foot (2003).

                                                                                                       Visit of Monty of Alamein

The world of philosophy is represented by Anthony Flew (1992) and Mary Warnock (1985) and music by Gillian Weir (1987) and James McMillan (2000). Sporting figures also feature, including Alex Ferguson (1996) and Sir Matt Busby (1971). Names from broadcasting and journalism from days gone by are included, such as Robin Day (1972), Brian Redhead (1967) and Alistair Cooke (1972). In addition we have the signatures of a number of Old Mancunians who have made a mark in their field, including Michael Atiyah (1993), Ben Kingsley (1999) and Lord Woolton (1950).
The book ends with former Labour leader Michael Foot’s signature and the comment “Apologies for my silences. Not a usual apology“. Did the MGS boys leave him speechless?
