For almost 20 years a group of former Foreign Trek staff, the Old Trekkers’ Group (OTG), have met for monthly social walks up to about 8 miles, mainly in the Peak District. Regular walkers have been Allan and Lesley Witton, John and Judith Willson, Roger Hand, Tim Pattison, and there are numerous others who have joined us occasionally.
Since 2006 there has also been an Old Trekkers’ Trek from hut-to-hut each summer, mostly in the Alps, but also in the Dolomites, Pyrenees and Norway. Allan and Lesley Witton and John and Judith Willson have done all 14 treks, Roger Hand and Tim Pattison have been on the majority, and Paul Shufflebottom, Ian Thorpe, Nigel Burin and Mark Hesketh have joined us occasionally.
Our planned and booked hut-to-hut trek in the Dachstein had to be cancelled because of Covid in 2000 and 2021. By 2022, with most of the party then in their 70s, we decided we wanted something rather less demanding than ‘hutting’, and had a week doing day walks from Obergurgl in the Austrian Ötztal. However we did do a 2-day return trek up to the Ramolhaus, at 3006 m the highest, and sadly last, of the 85 different mountain huts we have stayed in over the last 17 years. Illustrated logs for OTT 2006 to 2019 can be found at .wittontreks.com.
