When I came to MGS in 1962 the rules were a mixture of Douglas Miller's rules (shown here) and PG Mason's introduced a year later. I assume they were from Eric James's time.

Rule 1 of the 1962 version was the same as shown here - I should know, I had to write it out 50 times for some lunchtime pecadillo. Other gems I remember were “School caps compulsory except for the 6th form. No other form of head gear may be worn.” “An MGS pupil must never be seen eating in the streets” “The playing of card games is prohibited - except for 6th formers who may play bridge.”

Thanks Ian, really interesting. The cap rule must have been rescinded not soon after you left - I believe they were no longer compulsory in the 1970s and therefore vanished pretty quickly

Actually, Rachael,

the school cap ceased to be compulsory in my second year ie 1963-4. Unfortunately we still had to wear them in Jewish prayers - a bloody nuisance!
